Packing and Moving Tips

Before You Move
  1. Check the inventory on your quote. Make sure you have notified us of all the items to be relocated. Our pricing is based on the items listed there. Give us a call if you want to add or change this list.
  2. Provide us with all your contact numbers for both uplift and delivery. It’s best to give us a few contact numbers, including home, work and mobile.  Keep your mobile on at all times during transit.
  3. Advise us of any access issues such as clearways, long walks, stairs, above or below ground, and lifts.
  4. Arrange moving insurance. We recommend you consider taking Removals Insurance with Associate Marine. They can be contacted on 1800 009 796
  5. Plan your move well in advance. Packing and moving is a big job.

Packing / Preparing For Your Move.
  1. Be ready! Packing may take longer than you think. Start early so the packing will be finished when the removalists arrive. Everything should be ready for the removalists to pick up on the day of uplift.
  2. Tie up all cords of your electrical appliances and place them in a carton.
  3. We recommend that you only use removalist cartons because the cardboard is extra thick and strong.  Supermarket boxes will be too thin to protect the contents from damage caused by crushing. Stripy bags and suitcases are ok for clothing; if you use garbage bags put one inside the other for added strength. Avoid using plastic tubs for packing.
  4. Pack everything that can be boxed into a carton. Loose items are more exposed to loss or damage, use cartons for lampshades, water bed bladders, small plants, trampoline mats and gym weights.
  5. Desks and cabinets should be emptied and their contents packed into cartons. Lock or tape door and drawers closed.
  6. When packing crockery and glassware, use crushed butchers paper to line the bottom and sides of cartons.
  7. For plates, pack into bundles of 5 with each plate being separated by a sheet of paper, wrap the overhanging paper around the plates and place each bundle on it sides in the carton.
  8. For glasses, wrap each piece individually and place upside down in carton. Bubble wrap is recommended for packing glassware along with crushed paper.
  9. We offer a full packing service and can do all your packing at very reasonable prices.
  10. Refrigerators must be emptied, defrosted and drip trays emptied the day before your relocation.
  11. Dismantle swings, trampolines, garden sheds, bed heads, bed ends and other items that can be broken down to fit through doorways. All furniture should be dismantled ready for our removalists unless a dismantling fee has been paid.
  12. Empty fuel from mowers, whipper snipper, and other motorised machinery. We do not transport gas bottles under any circumstances; it’s far too hazardous to our staff, equipment and our customer’s goods.
  13. Clean BBQ surfaces of grease and clean lawn movers of oil and clippings.
  14. Artwork, mirrors and pictures should be packed in a picture carton using plenty of cushioning material or bubble wrap. We recommend that these items should be packed with special packing materials like –bubble wrap, etc. Slip pictures and prints into envelope formed by flattened cartons. The most breakable item in a removal is glass.
  15. Take the knobs off cupboards and chest of drawers screw them back on, on the inside.
  16. Tape garden tools, brooms and other loose items into bundles with packing tape.
  17. Disconnect washing machines from the taps and follow manufactures shipping instructions to prevent the bowl from moving whilst in transit. It is not the removalists’ responsibility for preparing them.
  18. When you dismantle beds & tables, collect all the screws and nuts put them in a plastic bag and tape them securely to the package. Make sure they are secure and packed somewhere you will find that after your delivery.
  19. When packing microwaves, make sure to pack the plate with bubble wrap or plenty of crushed paper.
  20. Avoid having any loose items; put all of your items into a carton.
  21. All electronics should be packed into a carton and protected with crushed paper. It’s best if they are packed in their original packaging.
Some Important Hints
  1. Leave your mobile on at all times.
  2. Make sure you put things aside whilst your furniture is in transit. E.g. wallet, mobile phones, airline ticket, keys etc. Pack these in your car while the removalist is there so they don’t get mixed up with the items to be moved. Make sure to pack some clothes for transit, in case there is a unexpected delay.
  3. Park two to three well-spaced cars out the front to reserve a spot for the removal truck.
  4. Don’t forget to disconnect the phone, gas, electricity and water and then have it connected at your new place.
  5. Make sure you are there at uplift and delivery.
  6. Make sure everything that was supposed to be uplifted has been packed and loaded before the truck leaves.
  7. It is important to remember that there are many variables that can affect your delivery times. Events such as accidents, road closures, mechanical difficulties, and another customer’s consignment being larger or more difficult than planned, can slow down a delivery regardless of what company you choose.
  8. We suggest NOT booking flights interstate on the same day as your planned uplift or delivery. This will create too much extra and unwanted stress.
  9. Arrange Home Removals Insurance. No matter how careful you are or how much planning you do, when you are moving house accidents can happen. Home removals insurance is suitable for families or individuals who are moving house within Australia. Call Associated Marine on 1800 009 796.
